I started off playing Guitar Hero 2 on a ps2 at wrestling camp. I loved the game so much I bought it for the 360 the week after the camp. I played the hell out of the game. I eventually beat it on hard right before Guitar Hero3 came out.

When I bought Guitar Hero 3 I skipped easy and medium difficulty and went right to hard difficulty. In this game the songs you had to play were great, but then you had songs that made me go, BLAH. I got to the last tier and this is when the controller smashing condensed. I barely beat “Cliffs of Dover”, then I moved onto “One”. I knew most of the song was going to be easy; I like to listen to Metallica so I knew of the ass kicking that was going to come towards the end. I didn’t think it would kick my ass so hard that it made me fail the song 10 times in a row (at least I got an achievement). I was so frustrated I said F it I’m going to play “Raining Blood”. I had no idea of the ass kickery that was to come because I never listened to Slayer before. I never got past the mosh part in 10 tries. I didn’t even want to try “The Number of The Beast” so I put the game away for awhile.

I had bought Rock Band to play while I was still pissed off at Guitar Hero. I loved that game. The set list was awesome, and the enjoyment level was off the charts. I didn’t run into the same problem I did with GH3 until I was playing on expert. Which I can understand this happening on expert because you need to be an EXPERT to beat the game, I am no expert. Also this game has some of the best DLC I have ever seen! It’s so amazing that I downloaded the song “Still Alive”(the song at the end of portal) for FREE. And they release about 5 songs every week and they are good songs, most of the time. Rock Band does everything right.

After Rock Band I went back to GH3. I beat “One” and “The Number of The Beast” my first time back. And still to this day have not beaten “Raining Blood”. It’s just too hard. So I went and bought the extra songs to play and I have to say each song was hit or miss. I would listen to the preview and went AWESOME or OMG PLEASE NO MORE. The songs that I thought were awesome were more songs like “Raining Blood”, awesome metal songs that sounded kick ass, but when played on hard kicked my ass.

Know at this part you might be asking, Steve if the songs kick your ass on hard why not play on medium. The reason I don’t play on medium is the fact that medium uses 86% less notes which makes the fake guitar playing even faker and less enjoy able. Plus it is way too easy.

The Guitar Hero series redeemed it’s self when Guitar Hero: Aerosmith came out. Many of you mainstream music listeners probably have no idea who Aerosmith is. In that case go look them up on Wikipedia. This was an excellent installment to the Guitar Hero series. The hard difficulty mode was a little easier than playing Rock Band on hard. But over all I had a blast playing the songs. The combination of great songs and a difficulty that doesn’t punish for every little thing makes for a great experience.

And know it is that time of year where we are eagerly awaiting Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour. Know the Rock Band 2 set list has been announced and I have to say it looks almost good the whole way around. There are a few songs that are complete WTFs. But that’s going to happen. GH:WT is looking solid with the addition of drums and a microphone, basically making it Band Hero but I guess they didn’t want to change the name. I’m just hoping the game’s difficulty goes back to the way GH2 was set up.
